On the occasion of World Telecom & Information Society Day 2010, I am immensely pleased to note that Universal Service Fund of Pakistan is already very actively involved in promoting this theme, strongly believing that today better cities are only possible through ICT’s. Universal Service Fund Pakistan started the program to spread broadband in all the second and third tier cities of the country towards the end of 2008. A survey had revealed at that time that broadband existed in the country only in about a dozen large cities. The program “Broadband for un-served areas”, was started on a telecom-region by telecom-region basis and the first contract was signed on 27th April 2009. Today, in less than 13 Months, one notes with satisfaction that broadband has been rolled out in more than 80 cities of the country, with 72,000 broadband connections already working. All this is apart from the other programs of Universal Service Fund where thousands of un-served villages are being provided basic telecom facilities and thousands of kilometers of optic fiber cable are being laid to connect all un-served Tehsils of the country with information highway. It is with this great zeal and enthusiasm that we celebrate WTIS Day 2010, firmly believing that with the spread of broadband the ICT’s will lead to a silent revolution to prosperity for the masses.

Broadband Program of USF
Broadband programme aims to deliver the social and economic benefits of ICTs to
the masses through affordable broadband, thus helping to achieve Government’s
objective of breaking the poverty cycle and eliminating the social divide. Broadband
is also a key element of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals on
poverty reduction and is globally bringing a paradigm shift to the way people run
their lives. It is also transforming every facet of communications, from entertainment
and telephone services to delivery of vital services like health care.
