CEO, Universal Service Fund
The Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
infrastructure in the whole world is becoming an
increasingly important component of the economy. The
significance of ICT can be seen from the fact that it has
penetrated almost every aspect of our daily life, from
business to leisure to society. Today PCs, cell phones,
fax machines, email and Internet, have become an
integral part of our culture and are playing an essential
role in our day to day activities. It is in this context that
Universal Service Fund has started efforts to take
Broadband to all corners of the country. About 16
months ago it started signing contracts to provide
subsidies to deliver affordable broadband services to
the un-served towns and cities of the country, starting
from Faisalabad Telecom Region. At that time a survey
had revealed that Broadband was available in only
around 10 large cities. Today one feels proud to be
able to boast that, thanks to USF, Broadband is
available in more than 139 small towns and cities of all
regions of the country and more are being added
practically everyday.
While we are familiar with the countless facilities
provided through the use of ICTs, it is difficult to stay
abreast of all the changes and the potential risks
presented by them.  Risks that involve theft of personal
information, spamming, virus threat and pornography.
These cyber risks have also endangered children who
use Internet as an information resource. However, as
representatives of Internet society, we should all
request our Internet Service Providers to join hands for
taking appropriate measures to proliferate Broadband,
curbing at the same time the cyber abuse.

Broadband Program of USF

Broadband programme aims to deliver the social and economic benefits of ICTs to
the masses through affordable broadband, thus helping to achieve Government’s
objective of breaking the poverty cycle and eliminating the social divide.  Broadband
is also a key element of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals on
poverty reduction and is globally bringing a paradigm shift to the way people run
their lives. It is also transforming every facet of communications, from entertainment
and telephone services to delivery of vital services like health care.
