HP has started the year with a cool, clean Slate in Las
Vegas. Microsoft unveiled the prototype PC Tablet from
HP, in CES 2010 on January 06. In his keynote address
Steve Ballmer, CEO Microsoft termed it an all in one media
device. The product is a joint venture between HP and
Microsoft and runs a full version of Windows 7 which most
likely would give it an edge over Apple’s iPad. Microsoft
took this opportunity to outline its strategy of connecting
the personal computer, mobile devices, television and the
Internet, in one device. While the convergence has been
demonstrated, it is yet to be seen how this technology mix
would perform in the HP Slate.
It could be an Intel or AMD processor at the heart of Slate
and both are more powerful than Apple A4. Another big
advantage the Slate enjoys over iPad is that Slate can
multitask and is Flash-ready. The incapacity of iPad to run
Flash is a tricky twist. Apparently, Apple does not want
other games and applications to compete its own iTunes
App Store and has thus gambled on iPad not running
Flash. That way, Apple can have a fair cut on all games
sold through iTunes. The consumers however, would be
reluctant to rejoice over such prospects.

The HP Slate is practically a portable desktop capable of
running all the standard desktop applications. Microsoft is
banking on running Windows 7 on the Slate and turn it into
an all in one media device. Microsoft is also pushing its
Mediaroom technologies. The Mediaroom 2.0 will be
available anytime now to serve as the next version of
Internet Protocol Television platform. Microsoft claims that
Mediaroom 2.0 will enable television service operators to
provide their TV services to more subscribers, delivering
more content to more screens — both inside and outside
the home. That brings the small Slate in the picture in a big
way.
